Michael Joseph "Ironman" Theriault

Michael Theriault Obituary

Michael Joseph "Ironman" Theriault, born on December 5, 1954 in Concord Massachusetts, peacefully went home to be with his Savior and Lord on Monday September 17, at 10:04 pm. He leaves behind a lasting legacy and thousands of loved ones including his beloved wife, Catherine and his little brown dog, Kya, and two cherished children, Graham and Jillian. His wonderful family includes his lovely Mom Helene; his brother Tom; and sisters, Yvonne and Cecile. His many nieces and nephews are all counted and remembered in his legacy. Michael's life can be summed up in a few words, "A life well lived". Though diagnosed with leukemia 13 years ago, he never allowed the disease to define him, and he passionately lived his life for the glory of his King. Though hard pressed on every side, he was not crushed, and he found God's grace every moment of his life, right up to his deliverance into eternity. His life verse was Ephesians 5:1-2 "Be imitators of God, therefore as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God". His life was truly an example of one who gave his life as a fragrant offering to God, and everywhere he set foot, he left behind the aroma of Christ. The impact that his years on staff as the worship pastor at Cornwall Church will never end. His music and his love for the Word as expressed in the "Arsenal" CD will carry his message to the world forever. His zeal for life included things like making a difference in the life of men as he daily "Texted His Guys"; worshiping God, studying Scripture, laughing, playing guitar, writing music, painting, traveling, surfing, scuba diving and deep theological conversations with anyone that would engage him. Though he fought the good fight and finished the race well, cancer was not what ended his life, but the call of God home to begin his eternity in his new body; that was how he left this earth. Strong and determined to the very end, he went home peacefully, surrounded by the people who loved him and ushered him into the Presence of Jesus with songs of worship and praise. Words cannot adequately describe this valiant warrior, this mighty man of God, and the void that remains without him here is indescribably massive.
There will be a celebration of his "Life Well Lived" on Saturday September 22, 2012 at 1:00 pm at his home church, North County Christ the King, in Lynden, Washington. Memorial donations may be made to Makeway Partners, Caring Bridge, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, or to a ministry of the donor's choice. Dear Graham and Jillian,

I met your father only once when he visited Graham and Kristina in San Marcos, CA. Graham made dinner, and I joined them, meeting your father and Catherine, for the first and only time. Your father was easy to be with, kind and gentle. Igor was working out of town then, he would have liked to meet him; they would have had much to talk about. May the light he shined in this life be with you, his wife, your mother, family, and all that loved him as he believed Christ's life shined on him in this life and surely now shines on him in his new life.

With love,

I wonder what painting Michael will be doing in Heaven? I bet God saved an awesome canvas for him so when we get there, we will see his work that glorifies our Lord and will he be leading worship with the guitar Jesus gives him?

I will remember Mike as a tender warrior who had an amazing way of ushering us into the presence of the Lord in worship. Thank-you for that awesome experience. You will be missed yet never forgotten.....the angels now have a new addition to their "voices."
I pray that the Holy Spirit will send forever memories of a life well spent for Catherine and family

We felt blessed by Mike's soft spoken words through his music. I feel God's presence when I listen to mike's cd. He will live on through the lives he affected. Your family is in our prayers.

Mike and I were what I called"Survivor Bros." I found Christ because of the cancer that attacked me a dozen years ago. It was as a first time ever member of a church, Cornwall in 2001, that I heard that our Worship pastor also had cancer. I knew I had to meet this man. Mike became an instant mentor to me. His passion for Christ overwhelmed me. In a number of ways. His music exalted our Lord. As did his words. And his deeds. For the next decade plus, he helped me grow to better understand the living power of God. Already I miss Mike greatly. He was a such a decent, gentle, wise person. But as cancer now rapidly spreads within my body. I am assured that when it's my turn to graduate. That I will again find my friend and mentor. But for now, I'll just be missing you Michael. Knowing that God is richly blessing you. The ultimate peace and calm. Amen!

Dear Jillian, we are holding you in our thoughts and prayers. Peace be with you; not as the world gives, but as Christ gives to you. He is the Good Shepherd. He never leaves nor forsakes his beloved sheep. Our hearts go out to your mother and your entire family. Lovingly,

His crooked grin, his twinkling eyes, his skilled hands playing the guitar, his constant heart to reach out to others first - these are just a few thoughts that quickly come to mind about Mike. Above all: his unshakable faith in Jesus Christ, his determination to see others brought into God's family and strengthened to grow. He sought for excellence - encouraging others to seek it too - and he won the victor's crown. We are all proud of him ... and proud of Catherine too, and Jillian, as they tracked with him right to the finish line. His legacy lives on, an inspiration for everyone to go for the gold. (Or the Iron Man, whichever metaphor suits you.) This was an extraordinary season walking with Mike through his lengthy illness, and I learned so very much from his courage. I was honored to call him my friend, and I will never forget him. "Rock on for the Master, Michael!"
