Rhoda Marie Fickel (Halverson) 04/05/1933 - 09/24/2016 Rhoda Fickel, 83, of Burlington passed away peacefully at Creekside Memory Care, September 24, 2016. Rhoda was born in Bellingham, WA. on April 5, 1933 to Gilbert Halverson and Evelyn (Johnson) Halverson, the first of three children. She attended school in Bellingham, receiving a teaching certificate from Western Washington University. On September 25, 1955 Rhoda married Dwayne B. "Jack" Fickel. They had 2 children Molly and Scott. Rhoda taught kindergarten for many years in the Burlington School District all the while taking care of the home, cooking homemade dinner every night after a hard days work which she was good at (nobody starved). She was dedicated to her family and little students with much patience, organization and perseverance. When time permitted she would pack up the kids, dogs and camper to go fishing in Canada riding shot gun while Jack drove the steep narrow logging roads and to Eastern Washington for pheasant hunting, hiking endless fields of corn and beet fields. On Christmas with four homes to visit she packed all the presents into the trunk, labeled to each destination making certain no one got overlooked (not an easy task). Summer months brought great fun, fishing and crabbing on their boat "The Yankee Girl" followed by crab feeds and salmon bbq's, tv trays, paper plates and beverages. She and Jack traveled to Mexico twice with friends. An outgoing personality, infectious smile and bright blue eyes she made friends easily and welcomed all. Loving music and to sing she could always remember the words, singing in the car on road trips to entertain Molly and Scott. They got their love of music from their mom. After retiring, Rhoda spent countless hours in the pursuit of rose gardening, golfing and riding her John Deer mower (no matter how short the lawn was!). Predeceased by her parents, husband Jack, son Scott and her brother James. She is survived by daughter Molly Mccalib (Tim) sister Janet Starkenburg and many extended family, who were by her side with much caring and compassion over the last three years. We would like to express our gratitude to the staff at Creekside, Hospice of the N.W. and doctors, Abbott and Stark. Please join us for a memorial and reception on Sunday, October 9th at 2:00pm at Skagit Golf and Country Club, 16701 Country Club Drive, Burlington WA. 98233. In lieu of flowers you may make a donation in Rhoda's name to the Jack Fickel Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o B-E Alum. Association, PO Box 350, Burlington, WA. 98233, or the . Have hope, be strong, laugh loud, play hard, live in the moment, smile often, dream big, remember you are loved and never never give up.
