Robert and Clara (Den Adel) Compton both grew up in the Sumas-Everson area, attended Nooksack Valley Schools, but didn't meet until after Robert served in the Army from 1951 to 1953. Robert and Clara dated for 6 months after meeting on a blind date. They were married March 26, 1955, in Sumas and together they have four children Terry, Janice, James and Richard. Clara Compton, age 80, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2016. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Robert Compton, age 85, just 4 weeks earlier on December 15, 2015. Ever since Robert was old enough to carry a rifle, he traveled first with his father and then his sons, to Eastern Washington, for opening day of Elk and Deer hunting seasons. He spent many hours cutting firewood and keeping the wood stove burning. Robert worked for Great Western Lumber for 32 years, milked cows on weekends for Allan DeGroot, all while raising his family. Clara was known for her beautifully detailed quilts. She made quilts for her children, graduation quilts for the grandchildren, and baby quilts for her great grandchildren. She worked as a cook at Nooksack Valley High School for 18 years and enjoyed being a homemaker. Together they enjoyed camping with family and friends, hosting weekend class reunions, and went on several special destination vacations. Robert and Clara are survived by children Terry (Heidi) Compton, Janice (Dennis) Holz, James (Mary) Compton and Richard (Debbie) Compton; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother Gerald (Connie) Den Adel and sister-in-law Marydell (Den Adel) Taubenheim. Clara was preceded in death by her brother Robert Den Adel. To honor this special couple, there will be a Memorial service, 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 23, 2016, at the Sumas American Legion, 134 Harrison St, Sumas, which will be preceded by a private graveside committal. Memorials may be given in Robert and Clara Compton's name to the ,, Seattle Children's Hospital,, or Whatcom Hospice House, 2806 Douglas Ave, Bellingham, WA 98225.
