Ruth Alberta Vandermay was born on July 14, 1929 in Tacoma, WA, oldest of 8 children born to Thomas and Ruth (Seger) Hartshorn. Ruth passed away September 20, 2016. She attended UW, UPS, and Tacoma General School of Nursing, obtaining a BS in Nursing. During this time, she met Roy on a blind date that Ann, then-girlfriend of Roy's brother Jim, set up. In 1954, she and Roy married in Bellingham. She was an R.N. for a time at St. Luke's. In 1956, Ruth had her first child, Laurie, and she went on to have six others: Christina, Leah, Jim, Karen and Steve (the twins) and Robin. Ruth is survived by her husband, Roy and their seven children: Laurie (Mike) Mallory, Chrissy, Leah (Steve) Rice, Jim (Tracy), Steve (Jessica), Karen (Todd) Pederson, Robin. Her grandchildren are Kaitlin (Ahmed) Salahudeen, Ben (Hannah), Nathan (Rachel), Bekah (Sean) Dowd, David Pederson. Great-grandchildren include Claire and Jameson, with two more on the way. Ruth's surviving siblings: David (Alice), Marvin (Emmagene), Wally (Joanne), Warren (Mary Anne), Francie (Alvin) Gissel. Predeceased are parents, Thomas and Ruth, and brothers Tommy and Lloyd. Donations may be made to Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department or to a Whatcom County park in memory of Ruth Vandermay.
