Scott Hagen Obituary

Scott Brian Hagen, 55, left this world into the arms of the his loving God on February 22, 2011. He died peacefully in his sleep beginning this new adventure. Scott was born at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas. He left the state of Texas when he was 6 weeks old. He spent his early years in Washington State. He arrived in Alaska in 1960. He was in Fairbanks until 1962 when he moved to Ft. Yukon, Alaska. Then he lived in Anchorage until he graduated from Service High school in 1974. Scott graduated with honors and was nominated to attend the military service schools. He worked for Spada's feed and seed for a couple of years and then commercial fished in Kenai. After that he worked for fire control on the Kenai Spur for several years. Then he went into business with his sister and brother-in-law (Sharon and Lance Backhaus) at Footworks on the K-Beach road. They sold the business and Scott became the kennel master for the Mitch Seavey racing kennel until his death. Scott knew the Seavey family for 15 years and when he went to work for them he became one of the family. They will greatly miss his booming laugh and big smile and the meals that he could cook. Scott is survived by his parents, Gil and Dixie Hagen, Lynden Washington; 3 sisters Sharon Backhaus (Lance) Hazen, ND, Sandra Smith (Mike) Wasilla, AK, and Susan Hagen , Palmer, AK; 4 nephews, John-Dixon Backhaus, Jeremiah Backhaus, Adam Hagen, and Alex Hagen; 1 niece, Jade Backhaus; great-niece Lorian Backhaus; and great-nephew Silas Backhaus. Scott was very active in the Junior Jaycees when he was the age that he could belong. He was also very active in the Friends of Athletes with Disabilities for the Soldotna-Kenai area. Scott was very interested in the Iditarod race and was in Nome for the early finishers. He made a lot of friends in his lifetime and his booming laugh and big smile will be missed by all that knew him A memorial service will be held later in the spring at the Grace Evangical Lutheran Church in Kenai. Memorial donations should be made to the Friends of Athletes with Disabilities, P.O. Box 2416, Kenai, AK and the Iditarod race Trail Committee, P.O. Box 870800, Wasilla, AK 99687.

I just learned of Scott's passing. It made me cry. Scott was a very special young man. I enjoyed his winning smile and wit in high school. I am very sorry for your loss.

I have kept in touch with Scott since high school. He was a lovely man and I know he will be missed. I am so sorry for your loss. I am sitting here wearing my birks and smiling at his memory.

I ran dogs against Scott in the Jr Sled Dog Racing Association. My Grand Father was Joel Kottke. I am very sorry for your loss.
