Suda Owen Newport passed away peacefully on December 6th. She had just celebrated her 90th birthday on November 11th! Suda was born in Kirkland, Washington in 1925. Her father, Malcolm Francis Owen and her mother, Suda St. John Owen, moved to Bellingham in 1930. Suda attended school in Bellingham graduating from Bellingham High School in 1944 where she acted in operetta's and plays and sang with the school's choir. She was active in pep club. She then attended Western Washington College of Education and the University of Washington securing her B.A. and her teaching credential in 1949. Suda taught for many years, music and 2nd grade, in the Lynden School District. Suda is survived by her sons Jeffrey Owen Newport (Suzanne) and Milton Corbett Newport (Dee Dee) and daughter, Mary K. Newport-Means (Mike). Suda has two grand-daughters, Amy Newport and Elizabeth Newport, two grandsons, Jake Newport and Chase Newport and two great-granddaughters, Olivia and Natalie. In her mid-life Suda was active in the Bellingham Theater Guild and performed in several plays. With Milt's encouragement, Suda became an avid golfer and played for years on Friday nights with the couples group and on Tuesdays with the women's group at Bellingham Golf and Country Club. In the last several years of her life she played bridge and had lunch at the club every week. She looked forward to the monthly lunches with the class of 1944 group. She walked most days in Fairhaven with her dear poodle, Laddie. Suda continued to attend local theater and was a voracious reader! For the last 20 years Suda organized the family vacation on Lopez Island. She would find and rent a waterfront home, every year a different home. She was able to remain in her condo until her death with the help of part time caregiver Patty Watson. They became good friends. Suda's children will receive friends on Sunday, December 13th, 1:00 - 4:00 at her condominium at 424 14th Street #402.
