Lynden resident, Edward F. Powers, age 81, died Wednesday, April 2, 2014 in Bellingham at St. Joseph Hospital. He was born July 26, 1932 in Youngstown, OH to Frances and Estelle (Gonzales) Powers. When he was 9 years old, his mother died and Ed moved to Galveston, Texas where he grew-up and was raised by his grandmother. Following high school, Ed enlisted in the US Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. While in the military, Ed met Luella Cowen and on November 21, 1953 they were married in San Diego, CA. Ed and Luella lived in Texas for four years and then moved to Lynden where he berry farmed and in 1964 established Powers Twines. In the mid-90's Powers Twine was sold, but Ed remained actively involved with Diamond Net and Everson Cordage. His favorite hobbies and interests included traveling, fishing and collecting old cars. Very involved in the community, Ed was an active member of Footprinters, Rocky Mt. Goats, Navy LST, Lynden United Methodist Church and the Elks Lodge. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Luella; sons Larry (Jackie) Powers of Bellingham and Les (Kelli) Powers of Everson; daughters Linda (Tom) Young of Lynden and Lisa (Brian) Herold of Surpise, AZ; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 12, 11:00 am at Lynden United Methodist Church, 500 14th St. in Lynden with Rev. Conrado Gonzaga officiating.
