Michael VanderYacht, age 54 of Ferndale passed away on Sunday, Sept 22 after a hard fought 11 month battle with cancer. Michael was born January 3, 1959 in Bellingham, WA; he attended schools in Ferndale and graduated high school in Twisp, WA. Most important to Mike were his two sons, Jordan and Bryce. Everything he worked for was to ensure they had everything he didn't have while growing up. He was the proudest Dad ever at Ferndale High Track meets and Baseball games. As a single Dad; he made sure a happy home was first and foremost and provided that to the boys. Mike has been a Hairstylist in Bellingham for about 30 years, owning his own salon, MIKOLS which has been and will continue to be a prominent business in the city. Obviously, most of his clients are women and whenever Mike was out anywhere we would laugh as he would always end up with his "harem" at his table. His co-workers and many of his 300 clients have been with him for over 20 years and he considered them family. It was this group of people that put together a benefit for Michael to help as he was unable to work. He was overwhelmed at such compassion and giving and said that someday he had hoped to pay everyone back. He loved to fish and camp with his group of friends, The Wild Boars. (Yes, secretly Mike was in a gang!) Although a Hairstylist by trade, he was a country boy at heart and it was proven by his skills at bull-riding, country music and making camp coffee. Many of his friends were there with Mike every step of the way of this journey and their dedication to him has been second to none and we thank you, The Boars, The Salon, Ferndale Friends, Bob and Mary and Twisp Friends. Mike is survived by his sons, Jordan and Bryce; siblings Cyndi VanderYacht (Kelly Welch) Steve VanderYacht, Chase VanderYacht. Aunts: Marie Cook (Terry), Kathey Chambers, Uncles Edward Jonak (Raye), Gary VanderYacht (Grace), and many cousins that loved and cared for him very much, as well as his close friend Jill Brehm and her family. He is also survived by his brotherhood of close friends, and of course; his "harem". He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald W. VanderYacht; mother, Barbara (Jonak) VanderYacht; brother Richard; and Uncle Jerry Chambers. Mike's wishes were to not have a service but to have a Celebration of Life at a later date. Most likely spring or early summer. As a special thanks to everyone at Hospice that helped with his care, the family suggests donations may be made in his name to Whatcom Hospice, 2800 Douglas Ave. Bellingham, WA 98225 or to a .
