SANTA BARBARA, CA: Helen Rogers of Santa Barbara, CA, went to be with Our Lord on July 13, 2016.
Born in 1926 in Lakewood, OH, as the first child to John and Ruth Nichols, she was 90.
Helen grew up in the Lakewood (now Cleveland) area then moved to the Cincinnati area where she graduated from Withrow High School at the height of World War II in 1944. She wrote letters to many of her classmates serving in the war. She attended the University of Cincinnati, studying art and there met her first husband James Gaskins. They married in 1946 and had two children, Larry and Linda. She married Nyal Rogers in 1958 and they had one child, Barbara.
Helen and Nyal owned and operated Rogers Well Drilling in Bellville, OH, for over 30 years. Helen later went back to school and obtained her realtor's license working for Whatman Realty for several years in the Richland County area. She was a member of the Clear Fork Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and National Association of Realtors. Very active with the Ohio Eastern Star, Christian Women's Club, Ohio China Painter's and Friendship Bible coffees, she made many close and dear friends.
After Nyal's death in 1988, she retired to Hemet, CA, where she lived for 15 years. She was a member of the Inland Valley Baptist Church and led several Bible studies. She moved to Santa Barbara in 2004 and was a member of the Free Methodist Church. She spent her last years at The Samarkand Smith Health Center where she and her family are so grateful for the wonderful, loving care she received there.
Helen was a loving daughter, wife and mother. She was a wonderful cook and baker as well as a very gifted artist. She won many awards for her charcoal, oil, and water color landscapes as well as china paintings. She made friends wherever she lived and was a very outgoing, positive person. She loved animals, especially dachshunds, and traveling. Helen loved and trusted God her whole life.
Helen was predeceased by parents John and Ruth Nichols; husband, Nyal Rogers; brother Wilbur Nichols; son Larry Gaskins and grandson Jeremy Carroll. She is survived by daughters Linda (Jerry) Carroll of Diamond, OH, and Barbara (Bruce) Scollin of Santa Barbara, CA; grandsons Bradley Gaskins of Mansfield, OH, and James Gaskins of Phoenix, AZ, and granddaughters Heather (Tim) Ross of Akron, OH, and Kelly Carroll of Santa Cruz, CA; and great-grandson Nicholas Ross of Akron, OH.
The family wishes to especially thank the pastoral staff of the Free Methodist Church, the nursing and administrative staff at The Samarkand Smith Health Center and the nursing and administrative staff with Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care of Santa Barbara.
A graveside service will be held in Bellville Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. on Friday July 22, 2016. The Bellville Snyder Funeral Home is serving the Rogers family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Helen's memory to the
