Stig Olsson

SHAFTSBURY Stig Olsson of Shaftsbury and Wyndmoor, Pa., died unexpectedly on Wednesday morning, Nov. 18, 2009, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. He was 73 years old.Stig was born and grew up in Stockholm, Sweden.

He graduated from the University of Lund with a degree in literature.

Stig was a captain in the Swedish military and served with the United Nations in Cyprus and the Congo in the 1960s.

He was later the program director for Youth For Understanding, an exchange program for students in Sweden and the United States. At various times he taught literature at both the high school and college level in Sweden and in England. He was also a teacher of English as a second language at Nationalities Services Center in Philadelphia.

Stig was a writer; he wrote book reviews for academic journals and a regular column for the Swedish-American publication, North Star.

He loved flowers, gardening, and the natural world as well as the buzz of city streets.

He leaves his wife of six years, Ruth Elaine Epping Bornholdt Olsson, of Shaftsbury and Wyndmoor, Pa.; his family in Sweden; his son, Christian Olsson of Amal; his daughter, Lena Lennerbrant, of Stockholm; a brother, Jan Olsson; and a sister, Margit; and three grandchildren, Daniel, Viktor and Lova.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME with the Reverend Dr. Guy Collins, rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hanover, N.H., officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
