Aldis G. Hill

1936 - 2014 BENNINGTON Aldis G. Hill, 78, a resident of Dewey Street, in Bennington, died Thursday, April 3, 2014, at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, N.Y., following a long illness. He was born in Bennington, Feb. 29, 1936. He was the son of the late Aldis L. and Mildred Greene Hill. Aldis received his education in Bennington. Mr. Hill served as a medic and cook in the Army while stationed in Germany. In May of 1958 he married the former Sylvia Kauppi in Shaftsbury, Vt. In earlier years, Aldis was employed at the A&P in Bennington. He later worked at Warren Wire and General Cable Fiber Optics in Williamstown, Mass., and for several years, had been employed at Cord Master Engineering in North Adams, Mass., from which he retired in 2003. He was a member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks # 567 and the American Legion Post 13. Aldis enjoyed woodworking and cooking and baking for his family. His family was his main interest. Aldis was one of the first drivers for the Pownal Rescue Squad when it was originally established. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Hill of Bennington; his children, Pamela Goodhue and her husband, Kevin J., of Bennington and Terry Hill and his wife, Wanda, of Bennington; two special granddaughters, Johanna Hill and her fiance, Jason Mattison, of Bennington and Jessica Woodward and her husband, Justin, of Bennington; four great-grandchildren, Mattheu, Kendrah and Allexys Longtin, and Preston Mattison; a very close family friend, Karen Goodhue; three brothers, Robert Hill and his wife, Linda, William Hill and his wife, Kathy, and Bradley Hill; six sisters, Trina Olson, Kathleen McCart and her husband, Bob, Rosemary Bourn, June Cardinal and her fiance, Joan Facto and her husband, Don, and Lois Eggsware and her husband, Ted; a brother-in-law, Steve Kauppi and his wife, Faye, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Hollis Hill and a sister, Shirley Hill. FUNERAL NOTICE: At the request of Mr. Hill, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Aldis G. Hill may be made to the Activities Fund at the Vermont Veterans Home through the office of the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
