Howard B. Vaine Sr.
1930-2013 BENNINGTON Howard B. Vaine, Sr., 83, a resident of West Palm Beach, Florida and a former resident of Jefferson Heights, Bennington, died Sunday, September 1, 2013 at the V. A. Medical Center in West Palm Beach. Born in Putney, July 19, 1930, he was the son of the late Gilman F. Vaine Sr. and Evelyn Rose (Phelps) Vaine. He received his early education in Putney and was a graduate of Bellows Falls High School, Class of 1947. Howard was an Army
veteran, having served with the 24th Division, 19th Infantry during the Korean Conflict
. He served from 1949 until 1952 and was a recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star
, the Presidential Citation, the Korean Citation, the Purple Heart
and five major battle ribbons. Howard married the former Doris Anne Kenney on Oct. 20, 1951 in Ozark, Ala. A life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, at the time of his death he was a member of Post 2007 in West Palm Beach, Fla. Howard was a past member of Post 1332 in Bennington and had served as Past Senior Vice Commander there. In earlier years he was employed as a herdsman on the Hall Farm in North Bennington and later at Globe Union in Bennington. Howard and Doris moved to Florida in 1977. While living in Florida Howard was employed as a security guard at the Palm Beach Polo Club. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing both the banjo and harmonica. Survivors include his wife, Doris A. Vaine of West Palm Beach, Fla.; three sons, Howard B. Vaine, Jr. and his wife Ellen of Shaftsbury, Paul S. Vaine of Hawaii and Kenneth A. Vaine of Lake Worth, Fla; a daughter, Mary Beth Miraglia of Stuart, Fla; two grandsons, Kevin Miraglia and his wife Marty, and Brian Vaine; three great-grandchildren, Joseph Miraglia, Brooklyn Vaine and Trace Vaine; a brother and sister-in-law, Gilman F. and Ruth Vaine, Jr. of Dodge City, Kan.; nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Vaine was predeceased by a grandson, Jason Vaine. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 10 a.m. from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
