Morton S. "Mort" Knights Jr.

1927-2014 BENNINGTON Morton S. (Mort) Knights Jr, 86, a resident of Leonard Street, died Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Vermont Veterans following a long illness. Born in Catskill, New York, May 24, 1927, he was the son of the late Mortimer Sr. and Theresa (Sax) Knights. Mort received his education in the Catskill schools. A World War II veteran, he served with the Seabees in the U. S. Navy. Mort married the former Rosemarie Dufresne in Bennington on August 31, 1947. For many years Mort was employed at Bijur Lubricating company until the time of his retirement. An avid outdoorsman, Mort was a longtime member and Past President (1973) of the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST). He will also be remembered by many in the area for his roadside stands where he sold wooden toy trucks that he had handcrafted in his workshop. Survivors include his wife, Rosemarie Knights of Bennington; a daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Francis Heisler of North Fort Myers, FL; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Diane Knights of Bennington and Gary and Traci Knights of Arlington; two grandchildren, Melissa Knights and her fiance Floyd Amidon of Pownal and Jennifer Thornell and her husband Sean and their children Katie and Aiden of Goshen, NY; two sisters, Joyce (Jim) Deeter of Texas and Shirley Flanigan of Bennington; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mort was predeceased by a sister, Marion Dufresne and two brothers, John and Leonard Knights. FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial services celebrating the life of Morton S. Knights Jr. will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Saturday, February 22, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. John Goyette officiating.
