Polly R. Wilson
1923-2012 BENNINGTON Polly R. Wilson, 89, passed away peacefully at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington on Thursday, October 18, 2012.
She was born in Bennington on March 20, 1923, the only daughter of the late Harry C. Ridlon and Violet S. (French) Ridlon. She grew up in Old Bennington where her father was the orchardist for the Everett Estate. She attended the one-room Old Bennington School and was a 1941 graduate of Bennington High School.
Polly graduated from Bennington College in 1945 and subsequently worked as a children's librarian in New York City and in Springfield, MA.
On July 7, 1948 she was married to Sterling A. "Zip" Wilson in Newport, VT. Following their marriage they settled in Bennington.
Polly worked at the Bennington College Library for many years when her children were young and later was employed as school librarian at Molly Stark School until her retirement in 1988.
For many years following her retirement she was a volunteer at the Bennington Free Library where she particularly enjoyed the Vermont History Room. She was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Bennington as well as the surrounding area and was often called upon to provide information.
Polly was also a Trustee of the Bennington Centre Cemetery and in earlier years had volunteered at the Bennington Museum. She was a member of Eta Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Bennington County Retired Teachers and Vermont Retired Teachers.
Polly was a longtime devoted and faithful member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. She served as Christian Education Director in the 1950's, was a member of the Evening Guild and assisted with the Altar Guild.
Survivors include her only child, Linn Susan Wilson of Newfane, VT; three nephews, two grandnephews and a grandniece; and several cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband in December of 2009 and by her son, Dale Stephen Wilson, in July, 1980.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial services to celebrate her life will be held from St. Peters Episcopal Church in Bennington on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. where the Burial Office with Holy Eucharist will be offered by Rev. Justin Lanier, Rector.
In accordance with her wishes there will be no calling hours.
Private interment services will take place at Park Lawn Cemetery.
