Yvonne V. Simon Mrs. Yvonne V. Simon, 92, passed away on October 16, 2010 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. She resided at Simon Lane on Woodford Lake. Her death followed a long and courageous battle with cancer. Known to young people and children as Mimere (Grandmother). Yvonne maintained her painting activities until recently. Born and raised in Clarksburg, daughter of Albert and Zinaid (LaPlante) Brooks, she attended North Adams Schools. She was an active partner with her late husband, Marvin, whom she wed on Feb. 1, 1937, in his land development activities and in the early pioneering of Woodford Lake as a residential and vacation area. Together, they purchased and renovated low rent buildings in North Adams and she became an informal "counselor" to many of her tenants. She and Marvin raised three sets of children. Besides their children David, Maureen and Philip, they raised Mary and Warren McClendon as their own, and following the premature death of a daughter-in-law in 1978, opened their home to grandsons Matthew and Jonathan Simon. She and her husband quietly sponsored a German refugee family after World War II, helping bring them to the United States. Her long deferred ambition to oil paint was finally satisfied through her studies with Mr. DuBerg, a well-known Artist and teacher, in the 1960's. She exhibited portraits, landscapes and still-lifes throughout the area, winning several prizes. She was married for 64 years to Marvin until his death in 2001. Her interest in others, especially those in need continued unabated until the end. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, David and Judith Simon, and Philip and Carol Simon. Her daughters, Maureen Higgins and son-in-law, Ron, and Mary Chalifoux and son-in-law, Glenn. She leaves her grandchildren including, granddaughters, Jennifer Sandquist, Kristin Simon, Jillian Simon, Yvette Chalifoux and Erin Pynes; six grandsons, Matthew and Jonathan Simon, Timothy Higgins and Aaron, Dean and Eric Chalifoux, and six great grandchildren. Her sister, and beloved friend, Lorraine Martin. She is pre-deceased by a son Warren, and her siblings, Oliver, Alice, Rachel, and Jeanette. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday, October 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Yvonne has now journeyed to her Heavenly Place
Leaving behind much well missed spaced
Her Motherly wisdom and loving care
Was willingly offered for All to share
Family and Children were the core of her life
As They all shared the good times and also the strife
With Marv at her side a life They did fill
Working together to pay every bill
When time permitted an Artist Smock she would don
To paint Portraits, Still-Life and Landscapes of Yon
Her illnesses were fought with Determination and Grit
And daily Life faced with a smile and ready wit
When the time did come for the pain to cease
Yvonne's Spirit soared up to Heavenly Peace
Her Life-Long striving's were for Family Love and Sharing
May Yvonne's effort's be Honored with All Mutual Caring

Deep condolences to David, Phillip, and Maureen, on your Mother's death. I remember her as newspaper carrier to her home in Clarksburg. She always fed me a snack as she was nearly the last house on a long route. David and I have had a 57-year enduring friendship. So sorry, folks.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Simon family in regards to the passing of a wonderful and giving human being. I used to attend Mrs. Simon's house for Thanksgiving as a child back in the late 1980s and had not seen her in many years, but continued to hear about kindness from my father (who thought the world of her) over the years. Please accept my deepest sympathies and sorrow as I ask you to find the strengh to celebrate the long and loving life of Mrs. Simon.
