Harry W. Beals Jr.

1925-2013 POWNAL Harry W. Beals Jr., 87 a lifelong resident of Pownal died peacefully Monday February 18, 2013 at Emeritus Village at Fillmore Pond.

The son of Harry W. and Laura (Pratt) Beals Sr. he was born at home in Pownal on August 9, 1925. He attended Pownal schools and graduated from Williamstown High School with the Class of 1943.

Following high school he entered the US Army where he was assigned to motor transportation, he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, his duties included supervising military vehicles and their allocation. He became a preferred driver and was cleared to be the driver for General George Patton, which he did with honor and pride. Harry was involved in nine major battles, receiving the World War II Bronze Star for his valiant service.

Harry married Lenora Mattison on August 7, 1948 together they raised four daughters, Lenora died January 25, 1989. He and Lenora had owned and operated Valley View Farms on Northwest Hill for 45 years. As a respected dairy farmer, he received the Farm Bureau's Outstanding Farmer of the Year Award in 1958, 1960 and 1961. He participated in land conservation for agricultural use, and was recognized in 1981 for his outstanding conservation accomplishments in soil, water and related resources by the Bennington County Natural Resources Conversation District. Active in his community, he was a Trustee of the Pownal United Methodist Church, Pownal Fire Department, Pownal American Legion and Past Master of Mt. Anthony Lodge F&AM. He was a member of the Tri-State Tractor Club and organized the tractor pulling competition at the Pownal Valley Fair, bringing his John Deere tractors to compete. He loved deer hunting, enjoyed country music and NASCAR especially Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Sr. and then Junior.

Harry leaves his daughters Deanna and husband Jon Peaslee of Pownal, their daughter Lenora, Bernice Bush of Westfield, Mass., her children Seth and wife Shauna, Laura and husband Ryan and Amanda, Cindy and husband Brian Darcy of Weedsport, N.Y., their children Erin, Colin and Connor and Alesia and husband Roy Parks of Williamstown, their children Roger and Dan, great grandchildren Kaden, Kayli, Kamdyn, Aaron and Hayleigh. He also leaves his sister Hazel Beals of Castleton, a close nephew Allen "Buddy" Beals Jr. and wife Betsy, their son Aric and wife Jill, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother Allen Beals Sr and sisters Harriett Beals and Barbara Bishop.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Saturday February 23 at 11 a.m. at the Pownal United Methodist Church with Reverend Sue Stewart officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hanson Walbridge Shea Funeral Home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present, Masonic services will be held at 6 p.m.
