EAST RUPERT -- Adelaide R. Werger, 82, a resident of Pawlet for 19 years, formerly of Ramsey, N.J. died on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004 at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Jersey City, N.J., the daughter of Alex and Minnie (Miller) Riel. She graduated Hasbrouck Heights high school, and continued her education in New York City where she graduated fromthe American School of Design.

She was married to Arthur J. Werger in New Orleans 1940. Together the Wergers raised a family in Ramsey. Adelaide studied watercolor and oil paintings with many nationally known artists and became a well-known artist on her own. She was a past president of the community Art Association, Inc. and a past president of the Watercolor Affiliates of the Art Center in Northern New Jersey.

Mrs. Werger has had many one women shows throughout New Jersey including Ringwood Manor, West Gallery, Lord & Taylor. She has exhibited in the Jersey City Museum, Newark Museum, Trenton State Museum and the Bergen Community Museum. She has won more than 100 awards including several best in shows. Her paintings are on permanent display in national and international private collections. She taught art in her residence studio and has demonstrated in oil and watercolar for numerous organiztions. Her professional memberships include: the Salmagundl Club, N.Y., life membership at the American Artist Professional League.,The National Art League, Inc., N.Y., A member of the Southern Vermont Art Association, Chaffee Arts Center, West River Artist and the New Jersey Watercolor Society.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Arthur J. Werger of East Rupert; her son Arthur L. Werger a master printer and professor at Ohio University, residing in Athens, Ohio; her daughter Susan Werger of Roseburg, Ore.; a brother, Alex Riel of San Diego, Calif.’ five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her daughter Patty in 1979.
