Adrian C. Lane

1933-2015 BENNINGTON Adrian C. Lane, 82, a resident of Park Street, died Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at his residence following a brief illness. Born in Bennington on March 8, 1933, he was the son of the late Glenn W. and Esther (Winslow) Lane. Adrian received his education in the Shaftsbury and North Bennington schools and was a 1951 graduate of North Bennington High School. He later graduated from North Adams State College with a degree in education. Adrian married the former Mary Ellen Sage at the Shaftsbury Methodist Church on December 30, 1952. Adrian served 21 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He served aboard the USS Tide Water, the USS Mt. McKinley and the USS Lloyd Thomas at many naval stations throughout the U.S., Europe and Panama. Following his military career Adrian and Mary Ellen returned to Bennington where Adrian taught 4th and 5th grade classes at Bennington Elementary School for many years until the time of his retirement. Adrian was an extremely active member of the Bennington Lions Club where he served as President several times and had held all club offices. Also very active on the state level of Lionism, he served in many state wide offices and was the District Governor for District 45, State of Vermont in 1987-88. Adrian was a life member of the Bennington Lions Club and was honored with the presentation of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 1992. Adrian spent many years volunteering at the Austine Green Mountain Lions Camp and coach of the Twin State soccer team. He coached freshman soccer at Mt. Anthony Union High School and was a volunteer in the library at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. He was a long time avid (but frustrated) fan of the Boston Red Sox and a member of the Rattlesnakes Coffee Club. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Lane of Bennington; three children and their spouses, Adrian (Skip) and Mary Lane of Cambridge, N.Y., Laurence and Anne Lane of LaJolla, Calif. and Rebecca and Niles Oesterle of Nazareth, Pa.; six grandchildren, Blossom, Jesse, Christopher, Darcy, Amy and Eric; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Becker of Bennington and a brother, Robert (Nell) Lane of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Shaftsbury Methodist Church on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Richard McSherry, pastor, officiating. Friends may call at the MAHAR SON FUNERAL HOME Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Private committal services will take place at the convenience of the family. Should friends desire memorial contributions in Adrian C. Lane's memory may be made to either the Austine Green Mountain Lions Camp or the Second Chance Animal Shelter through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201. All members of the Bennington Lions Club are asked to meet at the funeral home Thursday evening at 6 p.m. to pay respects to the family of PDG Adrian Lane.
