Obituary Condolences

SHAFTSBURY -- Adrienne Sylvia Barnes died peacefully at her home on July 21, 2003, surrounded by her family. She leaves her dear husband, Scott Laws Watson; her parents, Harry and Elizabeth; her siblings, Pauline, Douglas, and Sasha; their spouses, Adrian, Mary and Samir; and her nephew, Malcolm.

Born in Bombay, India in 1953, she grew up all over the world. Her great passion was animals, both small and large. Cats were never far from her side. At age 11, on her Tibetan pony, she began entering races, and three times received trophies from the king of Nepal. Ever after, she was a devoted horsewoman.

She showed an early flair for photography and the visual arts, which she retained lifelong. Recently, she had perfected a personal form of collage. She was at work on several commissions when she died.

Her nursing career spanned 17 years, all at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. She mastered various specialties, served as co-chair of the ethics committee, and in 2003 received the hospital’s Search for Excellence award.

This was official recognition not only of her professional and leadership skills, but also of what many had long known: that Adrienne was the nurse you wanted at your bedside. Warm, calm and caring, she was a true advocate for her patients.

Her family is profoundly grateful for the extraordinary support Adrienne (and we) received from her friends and colleagues in the Bennington area and beyond. We have been deeply moved by, and know that she drew great comfort from, the love and care they have shown.

Adrienne was buried privately at Maple Hill Cemetery in Shaftsbury. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. at the Old First Church of Bennington.
