WOODFORD -- Aileen C. O’Neil, 77, of Route 9, passed away Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, at her home.

Born in Troy, N.Y., she was daughter of the late Owen and Mary Kelleher Cartwright.

A 1945 graduate of Catholic Central High School, she also received a degree from Traphagen School of Design and Fashion in New York City and was a graduate of the New England Municipal Clerks Institute, Newport, R.I.

In her earlier years, she had been employed as treasurer in the family business, Cartwright Sales and Service, in Troy. She moved to the Woodford address in 1966, and in 1968 Aileen was elected Woodford town clerk and has served in that capacity until the present. She has also served as Woodford town lister for the past 38 years and town treasurer from 1968 to 1994. Aileen was a certified municipal clerk, certified Vermont clerk and certified Vermont treasurer. She belonged to the New England Association of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers, the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and the Vermont Municipal Clerks and Treasurers Association. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart-St. Francis deSales Church in Bennington. In 2005 she earned the distinction of being named Town Clerk of the Year in the State of Vermont. The Hon. Bernard Sanders presented her with a citation from the United States Congress and the Vermont State Legislature issued a proclamation in recognition of her achievements serving Vermont.

Aileen was wife of Albert C. O’Neil Jr., who passed away in 2005. She was mother of Kathleen O’Neil, of Bristol, and of Maureen O’Neil of Woodford. She was sister of the late Owen W. Cartwright and grandmother of Katchen and Quinn McElwain and Jaime O’Neil. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass for Aileen at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at Sacred Heart-St. Francis deSales Church. Interment will be in Woodford Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodford School Scholarship Fund or Hospice of Bennington County in care of the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St., Waterford, NY 12188.
