BENNINGTON -- Alan J. “Fuji” Ward, 41, a resident of Hutchinson Street, died Friday morning, Oct. 20, 2006, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness. Fuji was born in Bennington on Nov. 26, 1964, the son of the late Hector A. Ward and Ruth M. (Burleson) Ward, who survives.

He grew up in Arlington, attending local schools. He was married to his longtime friend, Marla Baker, on June 1, 2006.

Mr. Ward worked in the roofing business throughout his life with Dan Harvey of Arlington Roofing Company and Kevin Green. He had also been self-employed as a handyman. More recently he had worked at the Friendly’s restaurant in Bennington.

Mr. Ward was a jokester who loved to have fun and make people laugh. He will be remembered as a very likable and jolly person. He enjoyed watching wrestling and shooting pool. He was a fan of Elvis Presley, collecting Elvis memorabilia. He also collected Budweiser beer steins. He enjoyed spending time with his dog, Fuji Edward.

He leaves his mother, Ruth Ward of Arlington; his wife, Marla Ward of Bennington; sons Trevor Foster of Bennington and Trevor’s stepbrother, Perry Snyder, Ryan Hutchinson of Brattleboro, and a stepson, David Hyatt of Bennington; brothers Paul Ward of Arlington and John and wife, Mary, Ward of North Carolina; sisters Wendy and husband Bryan Watson of Bennington and Lisa Lynn Ward and Roy Griffis of Arlington; mother-in-law Linda Baker and uncle Gerald Reed, both of Shaftsbury; nieces and nephews John, David and Matthew Watson, Katelyn McPhail, William Griffis, Isabella Ward, Laurie Lonergan, Jessie Ward, Amy Ward, Mariah and Shelby Baker, Carson and Aston Towsley; brothers-in-law Mark and Frank Baker. He also leaves his two best friends, Ken Sherman of Bennington and Tim Arnold of Michigan. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a brother who died in infancy.

Friends are invited to call at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Tuesday, Oct. 24, and Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be present. In keeping with Fuji’s wishes, there will be no formal service. Cremation will take place at Vermont Cremation Service.
