Obituary Condolences

GREENWICH -- Albert O. “Al” “Chops” Davis, 68, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 31, 2007, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. He was the beloved husband of Winifred Brimmer Davis.

Born Sept. 13, 1939, he was the son of Orrin F. Davis and Rhoda Church Davis Burgess. Al moved to Cambridge in 1953 and graduated from Cambridge Central School, class of 1959.

He and Winnie were married on Sept. 17, 1960. They lived in Cambridge until moving to Greenwich in 1972.

When Al graduated from CCS, he worked for his Dad at Orrin F. Davis Excavating. Al then bought a tractortrailer and started into the trucking industry for the next 36 years, being know as “Short-Change” on the road.

Al was in the U.S. Army National Guard, stationed out of the Bennington, Vt., Depot for seven years in the Motor Pool, attaining the rank of Sargeant. He was a 37 year member of Cambridge-Salem Lodge 481 Free and Accepted Masons and a member of the Teamsters Union 294.

Al was honored by the Greenwich Little League because he sponsored a PeeWee team called “Al’s Little Truckers” for 10 years.

He loved classic cars and he has an extensive car collection. He had his own customized 90 Chevy pickup and attended many car shows from New York to Massachusetts to North Carolina. His enjoyments were owning riding horses, watching the Dallas Cowboys and betting against his son-in-law, Scott, about the N.Y. Giants. In recent years, Al became a big NASCAR fan and attended, with his family, several NASCAR races. Al and Winnie vacationed many places including California to visit the grave of Roy Rogers, as Al was a long time fan. Al was “Poppy” to his grandchildren, Megan and Ryan, whom he loved dearly.

Along with his wife of 47 years, he is survived by two children and their spouses, Glenn and Leslea Davis and Mickki and Scott Harrington, all of Greenwich; two grandchildren, Megan and Ryan Davis; five siblings, Marilee Hall and husband, James of New Port Richey, Fla., John F. Davis and wife Paula of Alachua, Fla., Linda Davis of Bennington and Loren Pierce of Fort Fairfield, Maine, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Saturday, November 3, 2007 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main Street, Cambridge.

A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Raoul Waters will officiate. Burial will follow at Woodlands Cemetery, Cambridge.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Easton-Greenwich Rescue Squad, Greenwich, NY 12834.
