Albert J. Macauley

1928 - 2014 BENNINGTON Albert J. Macauley, a former resident of Harvest Hills, North Bennington passed away after a long illness on Aug. 17 at the Vermont Veterans Home. He was born on June 3, 1928 in Sharon, NY, the son of the late Herbert and Iva (Smith) Macauley. Albert received his early education in the Amsterdam, NY school systems. A.J. served in the U. S. Air Force, from 1947 1950 in the Military Police in Panama. He was married to the former Mary Rice on July 5, 1963 at Eagle Mills, N.Y. Upon his return from service he owned and operated a bulk milk transport business for over twenty years; selling it to H. P. Hood because of competition against the independent milk hauler. He then worked at Putnam Memorial Hospital (SVMC) in maintenance until Weston Hadden Convalescent Center (CLR) was constructed and he was made maintenance supervisor of Weston Hadden. Upon retirement in June 1991, he and his wife Mary, moved to The Villages of Lady Lake, Florida, where they spent 15 years. They returned to Bennington in September 2006 to be closer to family for health reasons. Albert is a Lifetime member of the Bennington Elks Lodge #567 and Past President of the former Bennington Club. A.J. enjoyed "tinkering" with anything mechanical, music and dancing, woodworking, crafts, hunting, and his small dogs. In addition to his wife he is survived by many nieces and nephews, Steve (Debbie) Rice, Christine (Larry) Herrington, Shawn Rice, Paul (Susan) Rice, Brian (Debi) Rice, Beth (Dennis) Kissel, Dan (Lynn) Rice, Alvin Jr. (Pam) Macauley, Gail Sourdiffe, Richard Macauley and his wife, Betty Sperlonga, Mary (David) Velcher, Nancy Macauley and Patricia Woffer. He was predeceased by his brothers Alvin and Herbert, and sister Iva. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME, in Bennington. Interment will follow in the Woodlands Cemetery in Cambridge, NY. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home, where he received excellent care. Contributions may be sent to the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
