SUN CITY, Ariz. -- Albert W. Irons, a native of Bennington, Vt., passed away quietly on the evening of Dec. 3, 2007, as the result of an accident at his home. He was an Air Force professional who achieved the grade of chief master sergeant, the highest enlisted Air Force rank. Al received many awards and decorations during his military career and retired with honors in June 1981 with 28 years of service.

Born in Bennington on Jan. 7, 1930, he attended schools in Bennington and Lyndonville, Vt. He graduated from St. Leo’s College with a bachelor’s degree in 1972 while on active duty.

Al was noted for his prowess on the golf course, and was a golf pro at several Air Force bases during his first three years of service. In addition to assignments in the United States, his service included tours of duty in positions of progressively increasing responsibility in Japan, Okinawa, Vietnam and Germany.

He was predeceased by his father and mother, J. Gillam Irons and Gladys (Spicer) Irons, and his first wife, Margaret (Whyte) "Margie" Irons, the mother of his children. Survivors include his wife Mary Margaret (Cahill) "Peggy" Irons; his sons Albert W. "Chip" Irons II of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla., Randall S. "Randy" Irons of Vista, Calif., Jamie L. Irons of Morro Bay, Calif., and his granddaughter Katie Lynn Irons of Raleigh, N.C.; his brothers, John G. Irons Jr. of Bennington and Howard S. Irons of Boca Raton, Fla. Survivors also include Peggy’s children, Marlene Dailey of Burlington, Vt., Kimberley Molina of Henderson, Nev., John Dailey of Las Vegas, and grandchildren Melissa, Daniel and Kevin Molina of Henderson.

At Al’s request there will be no funeral. There will, however, be a celebration of life for family and friends on Jan. 7, 2008, the anniversary of his birth.
