Obituary Condolences

Alf Nilsen

1929-2013 Alf Nilsen, a resident of Lisle Hill in Wilmington, passed away Thursday June 27, 2013 at his home.

Alf was born in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, New York on July 29, 1929 the son of Martin and Helga (Petersen) Nilsen. He spent his youth in Norway, Staten Island, New York and several small towns along the New Jersey Shore. After serving in the United States Army at Camp Hood and Camp Kilmer and a lengthy trip abroad he married his beloved Eleanor (Gundersen) in 1958.

Alf did commercial fishing with his father then became a dock builder and member of Union Local 1456. It took seven years, working nights and weekends, for Alf to build Nordic Hills Lodge on Cold Brook Road, but he was able to move his family to move his family to Wilmington in 1967. Alf and Eleanor operated the lodge for twenty years while raising their children Sonja, Erik and Karl. Eleanor passed away in 1989; Alf spent the ensuing years working on various construction projects in the area including houses he built with his son Erik. Alf played sandlot ball on Staten Island and was an avid skier well into his seventies. He took up golf at age fifty and was a charter member of Haystack Golf Club where he seldom missed Breakfast Club or a tournament. Spending winters in Sarasota gave him opportunities for golf with a group of retired fire fighters and for the grey hound racing that he called "Feeding the Dogs". Ever the genial host, Alf loved a party. He was a great dancer in both popular and the traditional Norwegian styles. He enjoyed travelling and meeting people and could strike up a conversation anywhere. Alf was a sixty-five year member of Nansen Lodge 3-410 on Staten Island and a life member of Sons of Norway. He also held memberships in several civic, fraternal and service organizations. Treasured friendships were Alf's blessing from his boyhood pals on through the young men who matured under his relentless needling.

He will be lovingly missed by a host of friends and extended family in the United States and in Norway.

Surviving family members are Erik and Kim Nilsen, Karl and Jen Nilsen and grandsons Nick and Gunnar; Sonja Nilsen and granddaughters Rachel and Sandra Rubin and Kyla Lavoy. He also leaves four nephews and a niece in New Hampshire who are the children of his late sister Gerd and Richard Smock.
