Alfred Alphonse Allen, Jr.

1927-2015 BENNINGTON Alfred Alphonse Allen, Jr. 89, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2015 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a short courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Bennington, on Feb. 10, 1927 and was the son of the late Alfred A. and Melvina (Roy) Allen, Sr. He received his education in local schools and was a graduate of Bennington High School, Class of 1944. He married the former Norma Katherine Gorman on Oct. 10, 1948 in Bennington. Mrs. Allen died Sunday, March 1, 2015. He served in the Navy during World War II. Upon returning from the war, he went to work for King Company Cleaners, and then at Polygraphic Press and retired from U.S. Tsubaki. Inc. of Bennington. Al was a lifelong member of the Bennington Elks Club, the American Legion Post #13 of Bennington, Knights of Columbus Bennington Council, the Bennington Club, Putnam Hose Fire Department, National Ski Patrol, Oakerwood Golf Course and the Mt. Anthony Golf & Country Club. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. In earlier years, Al built a beautiful lake home on Babcock Lake where he and Kay would spend many summers with the family. He and the boys also would spend winters on Woodford Mountain in search of the elusive Great White Tail where they would also play many hands of cards. There was no shortage of "baked ham and hot podada" ...Al was the chef. He enjoyed bowling, softball, skiing, horseshoes, darts, billiards, hunting, fishing, cribbage and was a lifelong avid golfer. Survivors include his daughters; Lynn Allen Hennessey and John of Danby, Vt., Ann Allen Herko and John of Winooski, Vt. and Cathy Allen Cota and Mark of West Rutland, Vt. He leaves his two sons; Gary M. and Cynthia (Latif) Allen of Mocksville, N.C. and John A. and Cathy (Crafts) Allen of Brattleboro, Vt. He leaves his grandchildren: Michael Allen, Nicholas Allen, Josh Hennessey, Kristyn Hennessey, Griffin Allen, Daniel Allen, Christopher Herko, Alex Herko, Dustin Cone and Courtney Cone, as well as six great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and many lifelong friends. Al was predeceased by his sister, Rita (Allen) Patten and her husband, Arthur. He was a hard-working and devoted Catholic, brother, husband, father, and friend who loved his family, his "buddies at Club Med", a good round of "bingo-bango-bungo" golf, a challenging game of pool, darts or cribbage and a good off colored joke. "Al never met a stranger. By the way, are you a turtle?
