SHAFTSBURY -- Alfred Joseph Barbagallo, 71, a resident of Harvest Hills Drive, died on Friday morning, April 2, 2004 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born in Rutland on June 10, 1932 and was the son of the late Alfio and Mary (Guyette) Barbagallo. He was a graduate of Mount Saint Joseph’s Academy in Rutland.

He married the former Barbara McLaughlin on Feb. 20, 1952 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Rutland. Mrs. Barbagallo survives.

The Barbagallos have previously resided in Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Connecticut before moving back home to Vermont. Mr. Barbagallo had been employed for many years at the former Triangle Company in Bennington, and was the plant manager at the time of his retirement. Most recently he had been employed at the Enterprise Car Rental Agency in Bennington.

Mr. Barbagallo was a communicant of St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington. He was an avid baseball player, playing in several leagues over the years.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, A. J. Barbagallo of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., Timothy Barbagallo of Bryn Athyn, Pa., and John Barbagallo of Madison, Wisc. He has three daughters, Mary Therese Barbagallo of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., Lisa Cathcart of Poultney, and Christine Rhodes of Shaftsbury. Mr. Barbagallo has three brothers, Paul Barbagallo, Joseph Barbagallo and Gerry Barbagallo, all of Rutland. He leaves 11 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by one brother, John Barbagallo.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Rutland on Saturday, April 17, 2004 at 2 p.m. There are no calling hours scheduled.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery in Rutland at the convenience of the family. Memorials in his honor may be made to the Vermont Chapter of the American Cancer Society through the office of the E. P. Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
