BENNINGTON -- Alice Bradford Bolt, 91, died June 7, 2004 at The Centers For Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in North Adams, Mass., the daughter of Frederick L. Bradford and Charlotte Stewart Bradford. She was the 11th generation of the Bradford family, whose ancestry can be traced to William Bradford, the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony who was a Mayflower descendent.

She attended local schools in North Adams and was a graduate of the first four-year class at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in 1934. She taught elementary school in western Massachusetts schools until her marriage in 1941 to William L. Bolt Sr. She resumed teaching in local Bennington schools in her 60s. Starting in 1947 and continuing until her retirement, she was a partner in her husband’s construction company. She was a member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church while living in North Adams where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Ladies Altar Guild. In 1969 she and Bill moved to Lade Sadawga in Whitingham, and then to Bennington 25 years ago. She was a 60-year member of the Fort Massachusetts Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an avid reader of non-fiction and loved studying the history of her adopted state of Vermont. She was devoted to lifelong learning and as such asked that her remains be used by the University of Vermont Medical School for study.

She leaves five children - two daughters, Elisabeth F. Bolt of Plainfield, Mary Lou Bolt and her husband, Timothy Bouchie of Chittenden, and three sons, William L. Bolt Jr. of Brattleboro, Richard D. Bolt of Bennington and Benjamin B. Bolt and his wife Elaine of South Windham, Conn.; 11 grandchildren, Susan Bayles of Hortonsville, N.C., Gaia Hoerner of Tokyo, Japan, Tessa Stephens of Louisville, Ky., Andrew Bolt of Cambridge, Mass., Nicholas Bolt of Norwich, Conn., Meghan, Kelsey Bouchie of Chittenden, Matthew Paquin of Plainfield, Amy Dunstan of Mansfield, Conn. and John LaBonte Jr. of Old Saybrook, Conn. and Amy Moore of Brattleboro. She also had three great-grandchildren. Besides her husband of 55 years, who died in 1997, she was predeceased by a daughter, Charlotte B. Hoerner; two grandsons, David and Daniel Bolt; a brothe,r Stephen Bradford; and a son-in-law, Norman Paquin.

Funeral services will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in North Adams on Friday, June 18 at 1 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date in the family lot in Sadawga Cemetery in Whitingham. There are no calling hours.
