BENNINGTON -- Alice M. Halstead, 96, a resident of Eastview Drive, Bennington, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at Crescent Manor Care Centers following a brief illness.

Born in Bennington March 30, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Lorenzo and Fannie (Hicks) Moore. She received her education in the Bennington schools and was a 1929 graduate of the former Bennington High School.

Alice first went to work as a switchboard operator at the former New England Telephone Company in Bennington and later at Bennington College. After leaving Bennington College she worked as a bookkeeper at United Counseling Service until the time of her retirement.

Alice married the late Alton Maston in 1941, he died in 1951. In 1953 she married the late John Halstead who died in 1993.

Following retirement, Alice worked part time in the office of both Dr. Oliver Durand and the Adams Clothes Shop. She also volunteered at the Green Mountain Chapter, American Red Cross.

Alice was well known as both a talented seamstress and tailor and as an outstanding gardener. At one time she had her own greenhouses where she raised plants from seeds to give to her many friends. A compulsive cook, Alice always enjoyed spending her free time in the kitchen. Reading and playing bridge were also among her favorite pastimes.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William and Judith Halstead of Scotia, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Carole Thompson and her husband LeRoy of Schenectady, N.Y.; a grandson, James Youmans and his wife Stacey of Ravena, N.Y.; five great-grandchildren, Victoria and Chelsea Youmans and Nicholas, Emily and David Thompson; a sister, Florence “Budsie” Smith of Bennington; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Halstead was predeceased by two brothers, James and Howard Moore and by a sister, Elizabeth Escala.

Memorial services celebrating the life of Alice Halstead will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Saturday, July 14, 2007, at 12 p.m. with the Rev. Mary Lee Clark, pastor of the Second Congregational Church in Bennington officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Private burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
