SHAFTSBURY -- Funeral services for Alvan J. Lawrence were held at the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 5, 2006, with the Rev. Deborah Estey, pastor, officiating.

Words of remembrance were offered by the Rev. Estey and longtime friend John Page, who spoke of Mr. Lawrence’s dedication and excellence in farming and maintaining a high-quality dairy herd.

The congregation joined in singing “In the Garden,” “This is My Song” and “Hymn of Promise.”

En route to the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery, the funeral cortege paused at Mr. Lawrence’s farm on Route 7A. At the cemetery, committal prayers were offered by the Rev. Estey. Military honors were accorded the World War II Navy veteran by U.S. Navy personnel YN2 David J. Humphries and MNCM Glenn L. Niemiato. The American flag draping the casket was presented to Mr. Lawrence’s wife, Eleanor, by YN2 Humphries. Taps were sounded by MNCM Niemiato.

Following the interment service, a memorial reception, hosted by the ladies of the church, was held in the church hall. Serving as bearers were Daniel Bezio, Bart Bezio, Michael Lawrence, Lucas Cross, Jared Lawrence and Patrick Lawrence.

Among the many friends and relatives attending the service and calling hours were area farmers and suppliers, past and present members of the administration of the town of Shaftsbury, Bennington County Farm Bureau, and the state of Vermont Farm Bureau.

Mr. Lawrence, 80, a resident of Route 7A, died on July 31, 2006, in Burlington from complications from heart disease.
