Obituary Condolences

Alvin Feinman 1929 - 2008 NORTH BENNINGTON Alvin Feinman, poet and teacher, a longtime resident, died shortly after midnight on Friday, July 11, 2008, after a long illness. Born on Nov. 21, 1929, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he attended Brooklyn College and University of Chicago. He did graduate work in philosophy at Yale and taught briefly in Yale's philosophy department before moving back to New York City, where he worked in film and taught literature. He came to Bennington to teach at Bennington College from 1956- 1994. Feinman is the author of Preambles and Other Poems (Oxford Press 1964) and an expanded edition, Poems published 1990 (Princeton U Press). Eminent critic Harold Bloom writes "[Feinman's] best poems give and experience of a central sensibility seeking imaginative truth without resorting to evasions of consciousness. Technically, Feinman is a master a poet genius" The gifted poet Reginald Shepherd, recipient of numerous awards including a Guggenheim fellowship, writes, " Feinman's poems demand much of the reader (at times resisting the intelligence almost successfully, as Stevens said that the poem should), but they affer many rewards in return, including dazzling imagery (light and the work light does is omnipresent) and dense, rich verbal music. Like much of the best poetry, they can be experienced and enjoyed before they are understood." Alvin Feinman leaves his wife of 50 years, Deborah Dorfman; two sisters, Sylvia Losikoff and Vivian Krevoruck, and nieces, nephews and their children. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will be held privately. Memorials for Alvin Feinman may be made to the American Parkinson's Disease Association through the MAHAR and SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
