Andre H. Betit, Sr. 1937 - 2011 BENNINGTON, VT Andre H. Betit Sr., 74, a resident of Houghton Lane in Bennington died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation following a long illness. He was born in Bennington on Aug. 14, 1937, son of the late Hector T. Betit and Irene (Fortier) Betit. Andre received his education in Bennington where he attended Sacred Heart School and was a 1955 graduate of Bennington High School. Following high school, Andre joined the Army, serving from 1955 to 1957. He married the former Donna Pray, June 18, 1966, at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington. Mrs. Betit died Nov. 15, 1991. For 29 years, Andre owned and operated Trimont Texaco in Bennington, selling the station in 1986. He moved the business to his home, where he operated for another 10 years, retiring in 1997. He was one of the original founders of the Bennington Rescue Squad and a member of the Vermont State Police Officers Auxiliary. In addition, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. In 1964, Andre was named Bennington's Man of the Year. In his early years, he was very involved with the Boy Scouts and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. From an early age, Andre had a great love for the Studebaker car. He restored several Studebakers and completely rebuilt a 1958 Studebaker. He enjoyed attending car shows and his 1956 Studebaker won many awards. His vehicles were recognized in the Hemmings Motor News Magazine and most recently were awarded the residents' choice at the Vermont Veterans Home. Andre also enjoyed model trains, model airplanes, and he was an avid hunter. Survivors include a son, Andre Betit Jr., and his wife, Lisa, of Goffstown, NH; a daughter, Michelle Lewis, and her husband, Alfred, of Stafford, VA.; four granddaughters, Jessica, Alyssa, Samantha and Olivia Lewis; and two sisters, Madonna Betit of Rutland and Cecile Betit of East Wallingford. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church, 238 West Main Street, Bennington, at 11 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. The burial will follow in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday Nov. 3, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Andre H. Betit Sr. may be made to the Bennington Rural Fire Department Rescue Unit One through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street. Bennington, VT 05201.
