MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -- Dr. Andrew Richardson Knowland DDS, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2007, at the Carlyle House, Framingham, after a long period of failing health. He was the husband of 59 years of Becky (Crothers) Knowland. Born in Braintree, he was the son of the late Richardson G. and Katharine (Graham) Knowland. He was a 1942 graduate of Williston Academy, Easthampton, Mass., attended Duke University and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1948 and later served as a captain in the United States Army Reserves.

For 36 years he practiced dentistry in Williamstown, retiring in 1986. While in Williamstown, he was a member and deacon of the Williamstown Congregational Church, a member and past president of the Williamstown Rotary Club and served on the board of the Williamstown Savings Bank. Following his retirement, he lived in Bennington, Vt., before moving to Marlborough in 2004. While in Marlborough, he was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church, Framingham.

Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, Andrew R. Knowland and his wife, Marjorie Tuohy, of Wellesley and Graham W. Knowland and his wife, Stephanie, of Acton; one brother, Richard G. Knowland of Fayetteville N.Y.; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Graham, Andrew and Dorothy Anna Knowland. He was also the brother of the late William E. Knowland.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 10, 2007, at 2 p.m. in the Williamstown Congregational Church. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery, Bennington, Vt. The family requests that memorial contributions in his memory be made to The Alzheimers Foundation of Massachusetts, 311 Arsenal St. Watertown, MA 02472. Arrangements are by William R. Short and Son Funeral Home, 95 West Main St., Marlborough, MA 01752.
