Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Anna B. Mears, 81, widow of Donald H. Mears, a resident of Grove Street, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at her residence following a long illness.

Born in Bennington Jan. 27, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ida (Hurley) Sweet. She received her education in the North Bennington, Shaftsbury and Bennington schools.

Mr. and Mrs. Mears were married Oct. 23, 1943, in Bennington. Mr. Mears died April 13, 2003.

In earlier years, Anna worked at Coopers Needle Shop in Bennington and for 30 years worked at Tansitor Electronics, from which she retired.

Mrs. Mears enjoyed bird watching, shopping and her cat “Dutchess,” who was her constant companion during her illness. Her home and family were her main interests.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald E. and Debbie Mears of Bennington and Roger G. and Donna Mears of Cambridge, N.Y.; a daughter, Marie Maynard of Bennington; a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Stephen Hilchey of Bennington; and a son, James E. Mears of Bennington; 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Ruth Sweet of Bennington; three sisters, Josephine Colvin of Bennington, Betty Mayer and her husband, Robert, of Bennington and Sadie Rice of Pownal; a brother-in-law, Gordon Muckle of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

Mrs. Mears was predeceased by a son, Stephen H. Mears, by five sisters and brothers, Irene Mears, Lillian Muckle, Robert, Francis and Joseph Sweet, by a half-brother, Steven Jacobs, and two brothers-in-law, Gerald Colvin and Harry Rice.

The funeral will be held from Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church in Bennington on Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at 1 p.m. where the Burial Office with Holy Eucharist will be offered by the Rev. Anita Shell Lambert, rector.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Hinsdillville Cemetery.
