Anson D. Mason, Jr. 1936 - 2009 BENNINGTON Anson D. Mason, Jr., 72, of RT 9 Searsburg, former longtime resident of the family farm in Pownal, died Saturday, June 27, 2009, at his home surrounded by family and friends following a brief illness. Born in North Adams, Mass., on Nov. 4, 1936, son of Anson D. Sr. and Anna Barber Mason, he received his education in Pownal Elementary and Williamstown (Mass.) High School. He married the former Shirley Lillie on July 29, 1961, in Bennington. Anson was a fifth generation farmer. Along with Shirley, they also ran the Grandview Farm Guest House in Pownal. Anson was a former member of the Pownal Center Fire Department. He enjoyed attending fairs and tractor pulls, doing gardening and watching NASCAR. He was often seen at the local functions in Searsburg. He did enjoy spoiling the family pets, all the cats and the two dogs, Maverick and Junior. Besides his wife, he leaves one son, Kenneth, and his wife, Suzanne, of Pownal; his granddaughter, Aimee Sherman and her husband, Michael, of Sunderland; his two great-grandsons, Zachary and Jackson Sherman, also of Sunderland; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lorraine and Gordon Gates of North Pownal, Michael Lillie and Rosemary of Shaftsbury, Judy Somerville of Bennington, and Teresa Lillie of Pownal; one aunt, Mary Patterson, and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including his nephew, Matthew Somerville, who was his "Side Kick." He was predeceased by one brother-in-law, Ralph Lillie and by one nephew, James Somerville. FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside funeral services will be Tuesday, June 30, at 11 at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal with the Rev. Gaylord Campbell officiating. At Mr. Mason's request, there will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Foundation or the Town of Searsburg Pavilion Fund through the MAHAR and SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
