SHAFTSBURY -- Arlene Shirley Roya, 55, a resident of Hickory Hill in Shaftsbury, died on Wednesday morning, March 15, 2006, at her residence, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Bennington on Sept. 7, 1950, and was the daughter of George and Shirley (Joly) Freeman. Arlene attended local schools including Bennington Catholic High School and graduated from Mount Anthony Union High School.

She married Cleave Roya Jr. on April 27, 1967, in Pownal. He survives.

Over the years, Arlene had been employed at Union Carbide, Frasier Real Estate, R.T. Martins Real Estate, The Vermont Country Store in Manchester and then became co-owner with her husband of Winning Image in Bennington. She taught Body Pump for several years and had a black belt in karate.

She enjoyed scrap booking and was an avid reader.

Besides her parents and husband, Arlene is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Tamara Roya of North Bennington; her two granddaughters, Andrea Roya of North Adams and Jessica McLenithan of North Bennington; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen and Fran Beaudreau of Pownal, Susan and Allen Durfee of Pownal, Debra and Mark Rousseau of Bennington, Michelle and Robert Peabody III of Bennington, and Paula and Leon Roy of Pownal; her father-in-law and step mother-in-law, Cleave C. and Nancy Roya Sr. of Barberville, Fla.; and her sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Virginia Roya of Barrington, N.H., and Kim and Doug Young of Roxbury.

A prayer service for Arlene will be held on Saturday morning, March 18, at 9:15 at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington followed by a Mass of the resurrection at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington.

Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the funeral home tonight, from 7 to 9.
