Dr. Arthur E. Ellison

SHAFTSBURY, VT Dr. Arthur Ellsworth Ellison died Sunday, May 23, at his home in Shaftsbury. Born in Cedarhurst, N.Y., Dr. Ellison attended Williams College and the Harvard Medical School for his training in orthopedics.

A long time resident of Williamstown, Mass., he was a pioneer in the field of sports medicine. His passion for sports medicine took him into early research on ski injuries leading to his affiliation with the United States Ski Team, including the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

He was equally passionate in his role as physician for the Williams College football team. His clinical interest was the knee and the repair of knee injuries, becoming an early specialist in arthroscopic surgery.

A founding member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, Dr. Ellison was a member of the American Orthopedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He served on the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, Mass., and the Albany Medical College, Albany, N.Y.

He leaves his wife, Winifred Pentland of Shaftsbury; three sons, William, Arthur, and Brooks; two daughters, Jennifer and Kristin; and two grandchildren, Arthur and William.

MEMORIAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be at St. John's Epicopal Church in Williamstown on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 11 a.m. A reception will follow at the Williams Inn.
