Arthur E. George

1920-2010 POWNAL, VT Mr. Arthur E. George, 89, a resident of Route 7, Pownal, died Thursday, June 17, 2010, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, following a long illness.

Born in Williamstown, Mass., Dec. 17, 1920, the son of the late Earl V. and Mildred Goodell George Sr., he received his education in Williamstown.

Mr. George was a Marine Corps veteran, having served during World War II from 1942 to 1946.

He married the former Grace I. Southgate in North Adams, Mass., who predeceased him in October, 1973. He later married the former Harriet Patterson Bates in Shaftsbury in August, 1979.

Mr. George retired on Dec. 29, 1985, from General Cable in Pownal after thirty-two years of employment at their plants in Williamstown and Pownal.

He had been a member of the Bennington County Sheriffs Department since 1966. Mr. George was a life member of American Legion Post #125 and a member of the Greylock Community Club, both in North Adams. He was also a member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks 567.

Mr. George, an active member of the Pownal community, served as a Justice of the Peace, was on the Board of Civil Authority, was a former Pownal Selectman and First Constable of Pownal. He was appointed to the VOSHA Review Board by former Vermont Governor, Philip Hoff, and served on the Board for twenty-six years.

He was a well known licensed auctioneer for many years.

He leaves his wife, Harriet George of Pownal; six daughters and their spouses, Sandra and Mark Smith and Suzanne Caraman of Pownal, Karen and Joseph Schneider of Debary, Fla., Beverly and Frank Padula of Whitinsville, Mass., and Pamela and Daniel Allen of Mentor, Ohio, and Lory and Joseph Banks of Port Jervis, N.Y.; two sons, Scott A. George of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and Christopher G. N. George and Christine of Pownal; a step-son and his wife, Randall E. and Jean Bates of Bennington; 14 grandchildren, one step-grandson and several great-grandchildren; a sister, Gloria Rolland of Cheshire, Mass.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Douglas and Diane George of New Ashford, Mass., and Richard and Corrine George of New Ashford; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. George was predeceased by a sister, Jean Doyle, and four brothers, Robert George, Stuart George, Kenneth George and Earl V. George Jr.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Monday, June 21, 2010 at 10 a.m. with Chaplin Kenneth Coonradt of the Vermont Veterans Home officiating. Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday from 4-6 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Graveside committal services will be held at the family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal.

Should friends desire, contributions in memory of Mr. George may be made to either the Pownal Rescue Squad or the Activities Fund at the Vermont Veterans Home through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
