Arthur John Gilbert, Sr. 1934-2012 Arthur John Gilbert, Sr., 77, a resident of Gilbert Road in Sandgate, passed away May 8, 2012 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vt. Arthur was born in Bethel, Conn., on December 27, 1934 the son of Joel and Jenny (Taylor) Gilbert and attended Bethel, Connectcuit schools. Arthur worked as a foreman for Vanderbilt Chemical in Bethel for many years, retiring in December, 1996. Arthur was a United States Navy Veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict, a member of the Bethel, Connecticuit Fire Department, serving as Chief for four years and was a member of the American Legion, Post 69 in Arlington. Arthur enjoyed fishing and playing cribbage with his children and having lunch once a month with his buddies in Bethel. He was a huge sports fan, especially an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants and enjoyed listening to country music. Arthur is survived by his wife, the former Viola Dobson of Sandgate, whom he married in Bethel on June 17, 1955, his children; Foster Gilbert and his wife Stephanie of Pittsfield, Samuel Gilbert of Eaton, Colo., Arthur Gilbert, Jr. and his wife Heather of Essex Junction, Vt., Dorice Clark and her husband Steven of Presque Isle, Maine, Mary Crabtree and her husband James of South Hero, Vt., and Jo-elle Gilbert-Marko of Naugatuck, Conn., eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: A celebration of the life of Arthur John Gilbert, Sr. will be held Saturday May 12, 2012 at 5 p.m. at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home Historic Route 7A Arlington, Vermont. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be held Saturday May 12, 2012 from 3 to 5 p.m., two hours prior to the service when the family will be in attendance.
