Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Arthur S. James Jr., 88, a former resident of Barber Pond Road in Pownal, and more recently of the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, died on Saturday morning, Sept. 8, 2007, following a long illness.

He was born in Hoosick, N.Y., on Sept. 3, 1919, and was the son of the late Arthur S. and Mana (Grogan) James Sr. He received his education in Hoosick Falls schools and also attended and graduated from Williamstown (Mass.) High School.

Over the years, Arthur has resided in Hoosick, N.Y, Williamstown, Mass., and Pownal. He operated a chicken farm in Pownal, and along with his business partners, Marcus and Beulah Gardner, built the Domeview Cottages in Pownal as housing for users of the Green Mountain Race Track. Arthur had also worked for many years for the Pownal Elementary School as a bus driver and custodian. He served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corp in Panama.

Arthur married the former Mabel Irene Williams on April 3, 1948, in Hancock, Mass. She predeceased him in 1971. He later married the former Irma Willard on Oct. 8, 1977, in Pownal. She predeceased him on Aug. 11, 2007.

Arthur was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Williamstown for many years and was an avid lover of animals. He has had several teams of horses over the years, but was especially fond of the Halflinger breed of ponies. He and Irma were often seen out around town in their buggy.

Arthur is survived by his son William A. James Sr. and his wife Robin of Pownal; and his daughter, Janet A. Livingston and her husband Stanton II of Bennington. He has six grandchildren, William A. James Jr., Scott T. James, Stanton A. Livingston III, Kyle J. Livingston, Katie A. Jones and Melissa A. Livingston. He leaves three great grandchildren, Alyssa M. Jones, Andrew J. Jones, and Makenzie C. Livingston.

His step-children, Samuel Shoff and wife Barbara of Port Douglas, N.Y., Frederic Shoff and wife Martha of North Hoosick, N.Y., Larry Shoff and wife Barbara of Fort Worth, Texas, and Maryann (Ginger) Villarini and husband George of Hoosick Falls, N.Y. Arthur has eight step-grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren. He also has several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arthur is predeceased by one brother and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning, Sept.12, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT with the Rev. Penny Rich-Smith, officiating.

Interment will follow in the family lot in Southlawn Cemetery in Williamstown, Mass.

Friends are invited to call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. in Bennington on Tuesday evening, Sept. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m.
