Arthur S. Jones, Sr.

1921-2013 BENNINGTON Arthur S. Jones, Sr. age 92, a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home and former longtime resident of Dexter Road in Shaftsbury, Vt., died on Monday July 8, 2013 following brief illness.

He was born in Empress, Alberta, Canada on March 3, 1921, and was the son of the late John R. and Blanche E. (Coons) Jones. His family were homesteaders in Alberta. He attended schools in Troy, N.Y., and graduated from Lansingburgh High School in 1939, and Rensselaer Polytechnical Institue in 1949.

He served in the Army during World War II, and was a Sargent at the time of his discharge. He had received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, The World War II Victory Medal and the Phillipine Liberation Medal.

Arthur married the former Audrey Schmay in Troy on May 23, 1953. Mrs. Jones survives. The Joneses moved to Shaftsbury, Vt., in 1960.

Over the years he had been employed at Behr Manning, Rensselaer Valve Company, Ludlow Valve Company, Niagara Mohawk Power Company, BenMont Paper Company, Stanley Tool Company and for many years was the Postmaster in Shaftsbury, Vt.

Arthur is a member of the King Solomon Primitive Lodge 91, F & AM of Troy, honorary member of the Shaftbury Fire Department, member and Past President of the Norshaft Lions Club, member of the Shaftsbury Historical Society, the North Bennington Congregational Church and the Bennington VFW Post 1332.

Arthur and his brother Maynard were active in the Shaftsbury and Bennington Farmer's Markets selling the families' "Joneski Polish Pickles". He enjoyed gardening, travel and spending time with his family.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Melissa L. Jones of Burlington, Vt., and his son Arthur Stanley Jones, Jr. of Bennington. He leaves one brother Howard Jones of Clifton Park, N.Y., and nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by three brothers; John Jones of Bradenton, Fla., Harry Jones of Troy, N.Y., and Maynard Jones of Esperance, NY.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, July 21, at 4:30 PM at the Four Chaplains, All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home with Chaplin Kenneth Coonradt officiating.

A celebration of his life and interment will take place at a time to be announced.
