BENNINGTON -- Arthur L. “Stubby” Prentiss Sr., 73, a resident of Burgess Road in Bennington, died on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 26, 2008, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a brief illness.

He was born in Salem, N.Y., on Aug. 9, 1934, and was the son of the late Charles M. and Grace L. (Brown) Prentiss. He received his education in local schools. He married the former Gail Monroe at the First United Methodist Church in Bennington on May 22, 1955. Mrs. Prentiss survives.

Mr. Prentiss served in the Army during the Korean War.

He has worked as an auto mechanic for many years. He worked at Hogan Chevrolet in Bennington and Wilson’s Ford and for several years was employed at B & B Automotive in Bennington.

He is a member of the American Legion Post No. 13 of Bennington. Arthur was an avid horseman who enjoyed horseback riding and taking long trail rides. He enjoyed tinkering on cars, camping with family and friends and going on picnics. He was a great John Wayne buff, and he enjoyed country-western music.

Survivors besides his wife include one son, Arthur L. Prentiss Jr., and his companion Cathy J. Allen of Bennington; his daughter, Valerie Prentiss and her fiancé David Golobish of East Dorset; his daughter, Crystal Clifford and her husband Thomas of Cambridge, N.Y. and his daughter Amy Rogers and her husband, Matthew of North Bennington.

Arthur leaves his grandchildren; Jenna, Elyse and Lindsey Prentiss of Bennington, Jeremy and Chelsea Reppin of East Dorset, Sydney and Noah Clifford of Cambridge, N.Y. and Zachary and Joshua Rogers of North Bennington. He has two great grandchildren, Kyndra Caslin and Franklyn Rivera III.

He is survived by one brother, Harry Prentiss, of South Carolina and two sisters, Josephine Maxwell of Coila, N.Y., and Beatrice Hatch and her husband William of Cambridge, N.Y., as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. in Bennington with the Reverend Robin Greene, officiating.

Interment will follow in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
