BENNINGTON -- Arthur M “Art” Roberts, 84, died at his home on May 9, 2005, surrounded by his family. He lived a full and purposeful life. He was a friend to many, sharing his love of life even through a difficult illness.

He was born Sept. 22, 1920 in Hartford, Conn., son of the late Mabel M. Lloyd and Joseph M. Roberts. He served as an aviator in the Marine Corps in World War II and graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1950 with a degree in business. He married the former Katherine E. King of Franklin, Va. on Aug. 10, 1946. Mrs. Roberts died May 30, 2002.

Art purchased the Shea Insurance and Real Estate Agency in 1969 and moved to Bennington with his family. He was a member of the Old First Church, American Cancer Society, Elks Club, Bennington Club and Antique Car Club.

He restored historic homes in Brookfield, Conn., Gilsum, N.H. and Arlington.

He leaves three daughters, Katherine R. “Kathy” Satterthwaite of Bennington, Joan R. “Jody” Graves of Putney and Martha R. “Mardi” Sargent of Shaftsbury; five granddaughters and one grandson; three nieces and three nephews and their extended families.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
