Obituary Condolences

ARLINGTON -- Arthur M. Sillman of Arlington passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004. He was the husband of the late Margaret Sillman for 62 years, father of Susan Popko and Arthur M. Sillman Jr., father-in-law to Debra G. Sillman, grandfather of Bruce G. Popko Jr., Erika L. Sillman and Christopher J. Sillman, great-grandfather to Lucy, Henry and Walker Popko and loved by Bruce’s wife, Sarah Walker Popko.

Arthur was a decorated World War II combat veteran who served with the 28th Infantry Division. He participated in five major battles, including the invasion of Normandy, Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France and the Rhineland. During his service in Europe, he also saw action in the Battle of the Bulge. While training at Camp Livingston, La., he was assigned to Gen. Omar Bradley as a driver. Arthur served simultaneously with his brothers George (Marine Corps) and Norman (Army).

After the war, he raised his family in Oceanside, Long Island, N.Y. He worked on Long Island as an oil burner technician and briefly owned two gas stations. After retiring in 1978, Arthur and Margaret moved to Arlington. He became active in the community, serving as president of the Norshaft Lions Club from 1991 to 1992. During his membership in the Lions Club, he received a lifetime membership and was distinguished as a Melvin Jones Fellow in 1997.

Arthur also served as the president of the Arlington Food Shelf and was active in a number of capacities at the St. James Episcopal Church in Arlington.

Arthur and Margaret enjoyed their friends and peaceful life in Vermont.
