BENNINGTON Arthur B. Murphy, lifelong resident of Bennington, Vt. passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, January 4, 2010 at the age of 87.

"Art" was born in Bennington on June 14, 1922. Art graduated from Bennington High School on his birthday in 1940. In April of that year, he started working part-time at the County National Bank and began full-time work upon his high school graduation. In May 1943, he was granted leave from his banking duties when he entered the U.S. Army where he served with the 75th Infantry Division. Wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, he was discharged in November 1945 and resumed his duties at the bank which later merged with the Chittenden Trust Company where he rose to the rank of Vice President in Home Mortgage Loans until his retirement in 1984 after 40+ years of service.

Art was a very involved member of the Bennington community participating in numerous organizations. He served as the treasurer of Bennington County, board member of the Putnam Memorial Hospital and Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, and devoted member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Art will be best remembered as a tenor in the St. Peter's choir for 75+ years and his participation in various local musical groups to include the Bennington Community Chorus and the Bennington Choral Society. He greatly enjoyed serving as soloist at local weddings, funerals and numerous other events. His favorite pastimes included reading, working in the yard and watching the Boston Red Sox. His big smile and great sense of humor were enjoyed by all.

Art is predeceased by his brother Gerald Murphy, his sister Marilyn Murphy Oakes and his oldest daughter, Janice Murphy. He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, the former Eleanor Wilcox originally of Pownal, VT, son Kevin and daughter-in-law Donna Murphy of Fairfax Station, VA, daughter Candace and son-in-law Charles Heverly of Kennett Square, PA and two grandchildren, Lucas and Clara Heverly - both students at Penn State University in State College, PA.

Funeral Notice: Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, January 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St. Bennington, VT.

The Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, January 10 at 1 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 200 Pleasant St. Bennington, with the Rev. Dr. Anita Schell-Lambert, Rector, officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Park Lawn Cemetery.
