HUDSON FALLS, N.Y. -- Arthur Ioannou Papaioannou, 73, of Main Street, passed away Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Glens Falls Hospital after a long illness.

Born on April 28, 1931 in Vavouri, Thesprotia, Greece, he was the son of the late Ioannis and Alexandra (Korakis) Papaioannou.

On Oct. 26, 1964, he married Melpomeni Alexiou in Athens, Greece.

Arthur owned and operated numerous restaurants in New York and New England. He owned Arthur’s House of Pizza in Hudson Falls and Bennington Pizza House in Bennington, Vt.

Prior to living in Hudson Falls, Arthur had lived in Worcester and North Adams, Mass., as well as Bennington.

He was a communicant of St. Basil’s Greek Orthodox Church in Troy.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 40 years, Melpomeni Papaioannou of Hudson Falls; his children, William Papaioannou and his wife, Sotiria, and Alexandra Papaioannou and her husband, Nicholas Vasilas, all of Athens, Greece; two grandchildren, Fania and George of Athens; two brothers, Christos Papaioannou and his wife, Maria and Peter Papaioannou and his wife, Anastasia, all of Athens; his sister, Eugene Kalabaka and her husband, Donald, both of Athens, Greece; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Carleton Funeral Home Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls.

A prayer service will be conducted at 6 p.m. during the calling hours at the funeral home with the Rev. Emmanuel Mantzouris, pastor of St. Basil’s Greek Orthodox Church in Troy.

A funeral Mass and burial will be in Greece.
