Arthur C. Simmons

1924 - 2015 NORTH BENNINGTON Arthur C. Simmons, 90, a resident of Main Street, died Friday, Feb. 6, at the Vermont Veterans following a long illness. Born in Bennington Sept. 21, 1924, he was the son of the late Herman M. and Marsha (Allen) Simmons. Art received his education in the North Bennington schools and was a 1942 graduate of North Bennington High School. He was a U.S Army veteran and served during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. Art married the former Therese Hurley on Oct. 4, 1947 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Therese died Dec. 11, 2010. In earlier years Art was employed at Bijur Lubricating and Flint & Robbins in Bennington. Together with Charles Senecal he later founded SimSen Textiles in Bennington. He later worked at Cohoes Textiles and retired after 16 years employment at Bennington Convalescent Center. Art was a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a former member of Elks Lodge 567 in Bennington. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Jane Just of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and his seven nieces and nephews whom he was much loved by; Nancy Ann Crossman of Sandwich, Mass., Sally Wilson of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Darlene Wilson and Robert Hill of Youngstown, N.Y., Vivian DeCarlo of Fort Myers, Fla., Joy Monroe of Newfane, N.Y., and John Hill of Bloomsburg, Penn. He was predeceased by a twin brother, Allen Simmons who died June 28, 2008. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR SON FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 10:45 a.m. with a prayer and from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington at 11:30 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be offered. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery in the spring. Should friends desire memorial contributions in Arthur Simmons memory may be made to either St. John the Baptist Catholic Church or Second Chance Animal Shelter through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
