Arthur W. Witt

MANCHESTER, VT Arthur William Witt, 91, died unexpectedly Aug. 1, 2012, at his home in Manchester.He was born to his parents Arthur T. Witt and Jessie P Witt in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 3, 1921. He spent his childhood in Malverne, N.Y., and later moved to Manchester.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie Melville Witt, a childhood friend whom he married on March 23, 1943. Shortly after his marriage, he enlisted in the military and entered active duty on Dec. 13, 1943. He was deployed to Normandy in June of 1944, and was wounded in action in August of 1944. He received the Purple Heart, New York State Conspicuous Service Cross, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II and Victory medal.

Upon returning from the war and moving to Vermont, he began work as a carpenter for Hawk Dufresne; later on, he founded the construction company of Kerwynn and Witt. Some years later, Art formed the Beckwith & Witt Construction Co. with David Beckwith. In 1966, he established Arthur Witt & Sons Construction Co. with his two sons, Steve and Bill. His companies built and renovated many of the houses in Manchester. Art retired in 1985.

Art was an accomplished artist, hunter, fisherman, animal lover and avid collector of collectibles and antiques. Arthur raised show pigeons from the time he was 6 yrs old and continued doing so up to his death. He was most proud of his striped bass fishing, first as a boy in Montauk, Long Island, and in later years on Plum Island, Mass., where he had a summer cottage for many years. He went fishing on Lake Champlain every Friday in Orwell, Vt., up until his death.

He leaves his sons and their spouses, Stephen H. and Jerilyn Witt, Arlington, Vt.; Arthur William and Lois Witt, Bomoseen, Vt.; grandchildren and their spouses, Stephen H. and Michelle Witt, No. Hampton, N.H., Christopher J. and Melissa Witt, Manchester, Vt., Sheri L. and James Stannard of Dorset, Vt., Scott and Chelsea Witt of Shelburne, Vt., Arthur W Witt III, Pawlet, Vt., Robert and Becky Crammer Witt, Pawlet, Vt., and Heather and Brett Waite, Pawlet, Vt.; great-grandchildren, Stephanie Witt, Jim Stannard, Makayla Stannard, Dorset, Vt., Collin Witt, Patrick Witt, North Hampton, N.H., Blakely Witt, Shelburne, Vt., Tyler Waite and Ava Witt, Pawlet, Vt. Arthur also leaves his beloved dog, Herby, who was his faithful companion; his childhood friend for 85 years, Herb Houtman, Saugerties, N.Y.; special young friend, Walter Taras, Schuylerville, N.Y.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Arthur will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at 10 a.m. at BREWSTER FUNERAL SERVICE, 34 Park Place, Manchester Center, VT. There are no visiting hours.

Interment with military honors will follow in the family lot at Factory Point Cemetery, in conjunction with burying the ashes of his wife, Marge who passed away 2000 and his mother, Jessie, in 1999 at the family gravesite where Arthur's father is buried.
