Arvilla Carroll

Obituary Condolences

WHITE CREEK, N.Y. -- Arvilla Rose (Gates) Carroll passed away peacefully Sunday, April 15, 2007, at the age of 80.

The last child of Harry and Bertha (Colby) Gates, Arvilla was born Feb. 5, 1927. She was born, raised and lived her entire life on Lincoln Hill in White Creek. In her earlier years Arvilla attended the one-room schoolhouse a short distance from her home. Later she graduated from Hoosick Falls High School in 1943 at the age of 16.

In 1945 Arvilla married her husband of 61 years, Art Carroll. They set up housekeeping in a small cottage next door to her parents on Lincoln Hill.

Arvilla and Art raised their four children in this home, the house growing as their family did. Arvilla was devoted to the well-being and care of her family. She was very involved with her children in school activities, scouts, 4-H and sports. No time or effort was too great.

Arvilla had many interests that were passed on to her children. Her keen interest and hard work produced beautiful gardens of all types. She was especially successful raising African violets and rare strains of iris.

Arvilla was a gifted homemaker, skilled in needle arts, food preservation and cooking. She spent a great deal of time outdoors with her children, imparting to them her love of nature, and especially birds. Arvilla also smilingly tolerated any pets her children desired, no matter how “slimy” they were.

In her later years Arvilla became an avid collector and dealer of antique glassware. She and Art traveled all over the Northeast, buying and selling. Arvilla was a well-known authority on Depression glass.

She is survived by her husband Art; and four children, Shellie Carroll, Tannica Northrup, Jeff Carroll and Butch Carroll and his wife, Beverly; five grandchildren, Megan Neill and her husband, Aaron, Matt Northrup, Brian Carroll, Daren Carroll, Sarah Barnette and her husband, Jack, who are the parents of Arvilla’s great-grandchild Hailey.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad through the funeral home.
