BENNINGTON -- Asa Elwell, 88, a life-long resident of East Road, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2005, at his home following a brief illness.

Born in Bennington on Feb. 23, 1917, he was the son of the late Arthur and Alice Elwell. He received his early education at the New England Kurn Hattin Home in Westminster and was a graduate of Leland & Gray Seminary in Townsend.

Mr. Elwell married the former Mabel Harrington at the White Chapel Church in Bennington on April 7, 1940.

In earlier years he was employed at the BenMont Paper Company and later worked for 33 years as a foreman at the Polygraphic Company in North Bennington.

For more than 50 years Mr. and Mrs. Elwell operated Elwell’s Beagle Kennel on East Road where they bred, trained and boarded dogs. A field trial participant for many years, Mr. Elwell finished three field champions.

Mr. Elwell was the first president of the Bennington Rural Fire Department. He was also a past president and a very active member for more than 60 years of both the Hale Mountain Fish and Game Club and the Pittstown Beagle Club. An avid outdoorsman all of his life, he greatly enjoyed rabbit hunting with his beagles, deer hunting, fishing and spending time at his camp in Landgrove. He was also a member of the SnoGoers Snowmobile Club.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel M. Elwell; a daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Joseph Sausville; three granddaughters and their husbands, Beth and Michael Welch, Lynn and Michael Andrews and Betsy and Michael Madison; three great-grandchildren, Megan Alice Andrews, Michael Alan Andrews III and Camden Asa Madison, all of Bennington; a sister, Susan Buck of North Bennington; three sisters-in-law, Phyllis Bancroft of Port Orange, Florida, Thelma Elwell of Glenmont, N.Y., and Louise Cardnay of Bennington; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held from the White Chapel Church on Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Phillip Grippa officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery.
